Traditional gender roles of men and women are represented in Jessica. As a tomboy in a judgemental society, Jessica Bergman faced a harsh life in a harsh environment.

Jessica is set in New South Wales, Australia, around the town Narrandera where agriculture and farming was a common way of staying strong economically. Personal presentation was a big factor that ensured social survival.

Jessica defied social standards in an effort to help Joe (her father) out on their struggling farm. Thus, the identity of the stereotypical Australian woman during her times was completely ignored to do what was right for those who were loyal to her.
